Volvo Cars adds next generation XC90 to South Carolina plant

Next generation S60 to begin production in 2018 - next generation XC90 from 2021

ROCKLEIGH, NJ (September 25, 2017) —  The next generation XC90 SUV will be the second car to be built at its new plant in South Carolina from 2021. This takes Volvo Cars’ total investment in its US manufacturing operations to over USD 1.1 billion. It will raise the total of new jobs created at the Charleston site to nearly 4,000.

Additional 1,900 Jobs

The South Carolina plant will start production of the next generation S60 in the fall of 2018. The addition of the next generation XC90 from 2021. Planned is a new office campus creating 1,900 new jobs, on top of the 2,000 new employees currently being hired.

Developed around the challenges of modern city life, the XC40 aims to make the daily urban commute less stressful and more enjoyable, as drivers in the segment can now rely on the award-winning safety, connectivity and infotainment technologies known from Volvo’s acclaimed new 90- and 60 Series cars.

“The XC40 is our first car in this rapidly growing segment and has a clear focus on navigating today’s hectic city environments. Volvo’s City Safety Reduces Injuries by 48%

IIHS Study: Volvo’s City Safety Reduces Rear-End Crashes by 41%



ROCKLEIGH, NJ (January 28, 2016) The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing highway crash deaths and injuries, completed an academic study on Volvo’s City Safety system that is standard on all Volvo vehicles. The report found that standard City Safety in 2011-2012 S60 models and 2010-2012 XC60 models reduced the rate of rear-end crashes by 41%, injuries to occupants by 47% and rear-end crashes involving third-party injuries by 48%.

IIHS concluded that “City Safety appears to be highly effective at reducing rear-end crashes and associated injuries reported to police, even on roadways with speed limits higher than the system’s operating range.”

City Safety is standard on all Volvos sold in the United States and includes a host of safety technologies including automatic emergency braking. The system is being constantly improved, with intersection autobrake being added to the 2016

Polestar launches Performance Optimization for the new Volvo XC90

Volvo XC90 - even more dynamic and responsive to drive.

The new generation Polestar Performance Optimisation is now available for the new Volvo XC90, making the car even more dynamic and responsive to drive.

Jay Leno entertains amongst an unprecedented collection of new and historic Volvo cars

ROCKLEIGH, NJ and HOLLYWOOD, CA  – Swedish automaker Volvo celebrated 60 years in North America with a special gathering of celebrities and vintage cars at Paramount Pictures Studios in Hollywood on October 24th.

Comedian and vintage Volvo owner Jay Leno entertained a crowd of more than 300 Volvo owners, executives, retailers, and media amongst an unprecedented collection of new and historic Volvo cars, live music, and Scandinavian fare.

Notable cars on display included a 1928 PV4, Volvo’s first covered car; a 1955 PV444, the first Volvo exported to the U.S.; the 1967 P1800S driven by Roger Moore in the hit sixties’ television series, “The Saint”; and the all-new, award-winning XC90 sport utility vehicle. 

Guests explored Volvo’s rich past and bright future by visiting a series of Volvo branded shops created in the facades on Paramount’s City Streets back lot.
