Tax-free purchase of your Volvo.

U.S. Forces and Department of Defense civilian employees on official duty are recognized by the host nation as being covered by the “Status of Forces Agreement” (SOFA).  One of these privileges is the ability to purchase items tax-free.

Your tax-free status ends when departing your host nation upon reassignment. If you have been on official duty for over 140 days and you have registered your car in your name during your overseas tour, you are eligible for Duty-Free import into the U.S..

The entitlement for defense contractors to tax-free logistical support under the SOFA agreement isn’t a blanket rule for all contractors. It depends on the individual’s company designating that SOFA privileges are authorized for personnel assigned to that contract. As with the military and DoD civilians, the tax-free status ends with the contract termination.  The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) do not allow duty-free entry for defense department contractors.

Each state has laws governing vehicle registration and taxation.  Some states offer military exemptions and others do not.  Please check with your state’s DMV.

Who can take advantage of the Volvo Military and Diplomat Sales Program?

All U.S. Forces and Department of Defense civilian employees on official duty outside the borders of the USA who are covered by the “Status of Forces Agreement” (SOFA) of your host nation qualify for our program.  The same applies for US diplomats on official duty outside the borders of the USA. Department of Defense contractors with SOFA logistical support are also invited to take advantage of our program.
